Selected Poems:
For Sonia
It began with the constant
flight among the Appenines,
the obstinate myth of grasses, of churches,
but you soon broke it
this circle of roots and
doves, the prestigious organ
of the defunct parish, in the ephemeral spaces
of a twilight through the valley's. An
exorcism, the final one, by now
enfeebled by the sudden arrival of time,
of fear, the edge of shadow
the ululation of restless nocturnal spirits.
In the ancient
rocks of Montefeltro
your spectacle and that of your friends
and I found the people, the harsh
word in the conflict, the body thrown
into work and into the struggle.
I don't know
if I owe this
only to your strong body
and clear mind
your voice locked silent
in the tight temples
through your long steps.
And I thank you for my new hours,
and for the new-found
courage to reason.

Sonia
Inizò con la fuga
costante tra l'Appennino
l'ostinato mito d'erbe, di chiese
ma lo rompesti presto
questo cerchio di tetti e
di colombi, l'organo prestigioso
della pieve defunta, negli spazi effimeri
d'un crepuscolo per le valli.
Un esorcismo,
l'ultimo, fiaccato
ormai dal sopravvento del tempo
della paura, il limite d'ombra
l'ululato di inquieti spiriti notturni.
Nelle rocche
antiche del Montefeltro
lo spettacolo tuo e dei compagni
e ritrovai la gente, la parola
dura nello scontro, il corpo gettato
nel lavoro e nella lotta.
Non so se questo
debbo
solo al tuo corpo forte
e alla mente chiara
la tua voce pacata
alle tempie serrate
per le tue gambe lunghe.
E ti ringrazio per le mie ore
nuove ed il coraggio
ritrovato nella ragione.

The Grass Snake
athe cart went down to the well
it was snowing, just a fine
thread of incredible white snow over the green, on the borders
the blue rays
on the tender grass shriek
the leaf sends out
scents of moss and tree toads, one hears the thuds
the clematis hang like ropes
from there in love the grass snake flies
they make a great circle in the air
then you don't know where in the darkness they enter
to conceive
he's in the
water, the poplars
cover her with round feathers
always
in time that passes by
the wind would scatter stuff
thc rose takes shape
life in the valley was sweet
he sees the
black
snake between flowers and panicles
smashes it with a bamboo stick
breaks it in pieces
one slips into the water
and sinks it
but he's reborn
in the water
returns to stay
leans over from the stairs
and on the mirror
goes to the
blue well spring
with all the panicles he enters into the water
you hold your head underwater as long as you can
never able to exit the earth
grandmother,
the well spring is so far away
I lost myself among the underbrush
I didn't reach it
already the noctule goes by silently
among the tree trunks that become black
When I lie down on carth
to rest
the snake comes,
climbs on the boulder
becomcs a ecrson, dead like
the souls you see inside the woods
there was red
polenta, with the hare,
and the must was sweet to suck
but he thinks of the snakc,
it, on top, waiting all
night as long as it does not climb
but he who has
lost the well spring,
the water, the only thing
that stops the grass snake from returning,
had better get used to its presence

La biscia
scese il biroccio al pozzo
c'era la neve, un filo appena
bianchissimo oltre il verde, sui confini
stridono i raggi azzurri nell'erba molla
manda la foglia odore
di muschio e raganella, senti i tonfi
pendono le vitalbe come corde
di lì vola la biscia ch'è in amore
fanno un gran cerchio in aria
poi non sai, dov'entrino nel buio
per figliare
lui è
nell'acqua, di tonde piume
la ricoprono i pioppi
sempre
nel tempo che trapassa
spargeva il vento
prende forma la rosa
era dolce la vita nella conca
vede la serpe
nera tra fiori e panni
la schianta con la canna
la fa a pezzi
uno scivola in acqua
e ci sprofonda
ma rinasce nell'acqua
torna per sempre
s'affaccia dalle scale
e sullo specchio
va' alla fonte azzurra
entra con tutti i panni dentro l'acqua
tieni sotto la testa fin che puoi
e mai potrà piu uscire dalla terra
nonna, la fonte
è cosi lontana
mi persi tra le macchie
non l'ho raggiunta
già la nottola passa silenziosa
fra i tronchi che si fanno neri
quando mi stendo in terra
a riposare
viene allora la serpe, sale sul masso
diventa una persona, morta come
le anime che vedi dentro il bosco
c'era polenta
rossa, con il lepre
e il mosto era dolce da succhiare
ma lui pensa alla serpe
essa di sopra, tutta la notte
aspetta finchè non sale
ma chi ha perso
la fonte
l'acqua che sola
impedisce alla biscia di tornare
è meglio che s'abitui alla presenza
Time
That Was
Mother wo where
of all the most gentle
lost with your friends at the bottom of the ditch
your long braid over your slim body
reaching as far as life, you walked barefoot
in the clear water, you moved the rocks
over the den the crawfish crouches in
around are the hill, that one
day you hope to go beyond, not knowing the destination
you Iook at the steep incline and are overwhelmed
during the planting,
with his spade Madio today has caught
the hare in the clover at seeding time
the blackbirds fly by inside the clean air
the elder spills a multitude of grapes
but Celeste is far away, among the wires,
where he who wecnt to war dies
he will descend
down from the sky tonight -
the fable you told to attentive Elda -
I wait for him with a pillow against the walnut tree
there's something
like a grceat chariot flying over
I place the violets in the glass for him
I've taken the sheets from the ashes
then he dug
the earth right by the door
placing the walnut inside the clear branch
advice from Fenisa when she came to know it
that is the plant where he waits
he comes down
in his gray-green uniform
slowly down the coast's small road
a light shines on his face
never before
seen inside air
it must be that young woman who waits
for you to descend in the night from the sky
the first one who embraces you
They were together
before I was born
all staying there by the flower bed
fishing for chestnuts from the cauldron
now all are missing, missing is a house
that I had only before I was born
Testo originale:
passano i merli dentro l'aria chiara
getta fuori il sambuco acini fitti
ma Celeste è lontano, presso i fili
dove muore chi è andato a far la guerra
scenderà
questa notte giù dal cielo
-la tua fiaba narravi all'Elda attenta -
come mai s'era vista dentro l'aria
sarà quella ragazza che t'aspetta
venire nella notte giù dal cielo
la prima che t'abbraccia sulla porta
prima che nascessi
furono insieme
stavano tutti là presso l'aiuola
a pescare castagne nel caldaro
ora mancano tutti, manca una casa
solo prima di nascere l'ho avuta
